Heating/air conditioning and lighting can be controlled from the bed. The marble bathrooms have telephone, scale, separate toilet room, separate bathtub and walk-in shower with cascade shower head. La Rive - This haute-cuisine restaurant has two Michelin stars for its French and Mediterranean-inspired lunch and dinner menu. The restaurant has its own wine room and a large selection of Cuban and international cigars. The dining room, overlooking the Amstel River, has a club feel with upholstered chairs and low ceilings. A full buffet breakfast and à la carte menu are served in La Rive each morning. Open for lunch on weekdays and dinner Monday-through Saturday. Jackets required for lunch and dinner. Amstel Lounge - In a glass conservatory overlooking the river, this casual lounge decorated with crystal chandeliers and Queen Anne chairs serves light meals throughout the day as well as High Tea in the afternoon. A selection of fine cigars is also available. Amstel Bar & Brasserie - This informal bar and brasserie has a Scottish theme with dark wood paneling, plaid fabrics and leather chairs. Open daily for lunch, dinner and late-evening supper. Health Bar - This poolside bar is open daily during Health Club opening hours for light refreshments and healthy meals.

What to expect: Opened in 1867, the Old World atmosphere of this five-star hotel attracts cosmopolitan society, from royalty and aristocracy to luminaries in arts and international affairs. The 79-room property standing on the edge of the Amstel River has the feel of a private estate, with a two-story lobby decorated in relief sculptures, a grand central staircase and fine antiques. The hotel has its own boat launch, and can arrange boat tours of the canals on request, with or without catering.
